Tech-IT-Out - Computer Repair.

Everyone that has a computer will eventually have some type of problem (even with Macs). I have found that over 80% of computer problems are just software related, and that there is nothing wrong with the computer hardware itself. Some signs that you are having software problems are -

  • Internet access problem

  • Web pages don't display or work properly

  • Getting a lot of web Pop-Ups and Pop-Unders

  • Can't get or send e-mail

  • Internet search problems

  • Some secure web sites stop working

  • New Icons on your desktop that you don't recognize

  • Un-recognized Tool-Bars on your web browser

  • Slow performance

  • Program errors

  • Blue screen of death

  • Won't boot up

  • Won't turn off

  • Automatic updates for your AntiVirus stop

These type of problems are typically cause by, or are the result of -

  • SpyWare

  • Viruses

  • Worms

  • Trojan Horses

  • No working AntiVirus

  • Not installing security and software updates

  • Improper Software Installations

  • The computer is not being shut down properly

Most of these problems can be fix with research into the symptoms of the problems; and in the most extreme cases... reinstalling the software. After reinstalling all the software the computer should run just like new. Of course the computer must be completely cleaned of virus and spyware infections. I now find that spyware infections are the leading cause of computer problems; and that there are often the most difficult to clean and fix. Don't believe the ads that clam to fix all your computer by just buying there cure-all software,,, chances or these programs are made by the same company's that have caused a lot of your problems in the first place.

Of course, computers do have hardware problems as well. Some of the symptoms and causes of hardware problems are:

  • Unusual sounds coming from the computer typically is caused by dust building up on fans and in ventilation holes and can overheat it resulting in the computer locking up and can also lead to permanent damage.

  • Clicking sounds, lost data, and computer just locking up can be a signs of the hard drive going bad.

  • Lightning can cause the modem to fail or fry the power supply, or kill the whole thing.

  • The computer just locking up by itself with out doing anything to cause it.

Most of these problems will happing to ever computers if it is not maintained and never turned off when not in use. Computers have mechanical parts and they will wear out eventually. Few people realize that most of the low-cost hard drives have a MHBF (Mean Hours Before Failure) life of 12000 hours and only a one year warranty. That means that if the computer is keep powered on all the time, the hard drive can go bad after only 1.4 years or 16 1/2 months. If you don't backup your data (music-photos-documents) and the hard drive dies... you usually lose everything that you have on that computer.  And your just asking for serious damage if you do not have a Lightning Surge Protector Power Strip connected properly, including to the phone line or DSL / Cable modem, or you don't disconnect the power and phone or cable modem during a thunder storm.

My top tips to keeping your computer working properly:

  • Turn the computer off when not in use.

  • Disconnect it completely during Thunder Storms.

  • Keep a updated AntiVirus program working.

  • Do not open e-mails or attachments from unknown senders.

  • Never click on Links in Pop-ups or spam e-mails.

  • Don't go to web sites that you've never heard of.

  • Watch out for internet scams.

These are just some of the most typical problems. But to be honest, I have fixed thousands of computer problems, and epically with Spyware and Viruses, I've found no two are just alike. Every problem is some what deferent. If you pay close attention to what is going wrong, and you do the research on it, you can fix it. But of course if you don't have the time, can't stand waiting on the phone for hours with some phone tech support that you can barely understand, or learning how to researched obscure techno babble is not your thing... Then you can call me and I'll be glad to fix it for you at a reasonable cost

My philosophy for computer repair is simple.

  1. Diagnose the problem.

  2. Fix the computer.

  3. And last but most important... Fix the User.

Why do I do it this way. Because... unless I educate and inform the customer about how they got their computer problem in the first place, and tell them how to avoid doing it again; they would just end up with the same problem all over again. So don't ask me to help you with a computer problem unless you are willing to learn something about it.
